Powered Armor

Some of the most powerful pieces of technology in the wastes, and perhaps the most iconic as well, is Power Armor. This mechanized suits of armor feature some of the most advanced technology available and can turn one soldier into a human tank. Typical features in each version of Power Armor include special servos that increase the wearer’s strength well boyond a normal human, allowing them to carry heavy weapons that would typically require a team of soldiers to deploy. There are many different types of power armor waiting to be discovered, but here we will cover the most common types available to player characters.

Name AC Max DEX Penalty Speed STR RR DR
T45-d(1) +7 +0 -6 20 +2 4 4/-
T51-b +7 +1 -6 20 +2 4 5/-
Advanced(2) +8 +2 -4 25 +4 5 5/-
Tesla(3) +8 +2 -4 25 +4 6 5/-
Salvaged(4) +6 +0 -6 20 +0 0 4/-

(1)Due to the less advanced servo-motors in the T45-d armor, it is not as agile as later models and imposes a –2 penalty to DEX

(2)The stabilization gyros in the Advanced Armor grant the wearer a +4 bonus to resist Trip and Bull Rush attempts

(3)The energy dampening eguipment installed in this armor adds greater protection against energy weapons, increasing its DR to 6/- against energy-based attacks

(4)Salvaged Power Armor does not require the Power Armor Training feat to wear

While the T-45d armor is similar in its overall shape to the more advanced T-51b power armor, it is significantly less advanced than its later counterpart, and uses riveted steel plates instead of plastic composite materials in its construction. Various electronic and mechanical subsystems of the armor are exposed on the outside of its casing rather than sealed within as in the T-51b, making it far more susceptible to damage. In addition, a specialized body suit is required to be worn underneath the T-45d’s armored shell in order to facilitate linking the armor’s servos to the wearer’s own motions and to make the armor more bearable because of its heat dissipation problems.

The T-51b Powered Infantry Armor represented the peak of armored infantry technology before the Great War. The armor is fitted with a back-mounted TX-28 MicroFusion Pack which generates an output power of 60,000 Watts to power the HiFlo hydraulic systems built into the frame of the suit. Made of a poly-laminate composite, the outer shell of the T-51b is lightweight and capable of absorbing over 2500 Joules of kinetic impact. The 10-micron-thick silver ablative coating can reflect laser and other radiation emissions without damage to the composite subsurface. The armor usually carries enough fuel to last for one hundred years. Now, only the most technologically advanced factions with ties to the pre-Great War American military or federal government, such as the Brotherhood of Steel or the Enclave, have access to this type of Power Armor.

Advanced Power Armor
The armor was created by the Enclave’s skilled team of engineers and scientists after the Great War, as a result of a research program initiated in 2198, part of a larger project to develop various technologies. It is composed of lightweight metal alloys, reinforced with ceramic castings at key stress points. The motion-assist servo-motors used in the armor appear to be high quality models as well, giving the wearer even greater strength. The suit has an auto-gyro system to keep it upright and the knees can be locked in position, to prevent the wearer from falling over, if, for some reason, he loses consciousness on duty (e.g. takes a nap). Additionally, like the T-51b Power Armor, it includes a recycling system that can convert human waste into drinkable water, enhancing survival.

Tesla Armor
Tesla Armor is a name given to various kinds of armor designed to protect against directed energy attacks. They were constructed from plans left behind by Nikola Tesla that were confiscated by the US government after his death. The most common version found in the Capitol Wasteland is a variant of the Enclave’s post-War Advanced Power Armor Mk II jury-rigged with a Tesla device that is capable of dispersing a large percentage of the damage done by directed-energy attacks

Salvaged Power Armor
It is possible to strip down a suit of power armor in order to make it accessible to those who lack the proper training. The main differences from regular T-45d power armor are its lack of the original shoulder pauldrons, and parts missing from the legs. Essentially this is a suit of metal armor made from the scaps of a damaged suit of power armor.
